Lion King
By CK Advisory Board Member Joseph McManus
Here is the the scoop on Broadway's hit musical, "The Lion King."
If you think that this is just a boring, "adultified" version of the movie we all knew and loved when we were little, boy are you wrong. It is not your average dramatic play like "Rent" or "Les Miserables." The play includes a cast of many ( one of which I have actually performed with!). I especially liked the Rafikki character. Rafikki was just like I remember him ( or should I say her, for the stage production), down-to-earth and even funnier than in the movie. The artistic crew was hard at work with this project. The costumes were colorful and elaborate. The way wild animals were shown blew me away. If you watched the opening ceremonies of the Salt Lake Winter Games, you might recognize some of the designers' work from that. My personal favorite was the cheetah. I think it was the most ingenious thing. This was a GREAT play and I recommend it to anyone who can find tickets! (May, 2002)
